Capturing Whimsy (Bob Goff) captured my attention over a year ago: I intended to use it as a morning devotional in 2025 but a life-changing illness interfered. 396 days after my intended start date — I have opened the cover and “completed” day one, with the goal of working through the entire book and sharing my reflections, action steps, etc. Thank you for joining me today (more entries can be found by searching using “Living with Whimsy”.

I’ve always had a few modest ambitions. As a child, they included fitting in, having fun, and other aspirations shared by most my age. Over the years, of course, my ambitions have changed.

But one constant, from at least 3rd grade onward, is that of writing a book.

I’ve honed my writing skills (undergraduate and graduate degree in English, with an emphasis on composition); pursued a small free-lance writing career and write a monthly column in a local publication; attended writers’ conferences; etc. I’ve gone so far as to create a few very-loose book plans and even participated in the now-defunct NANOWRIMO — and finished twice!

The one thing I haven’t done, though, is write a book.

But as I’ve been sidelined from normal life these past 13 1/2 months, the desire to write a book has grown stronger than ever. This happened in large part, I believe, because (and I won’t belabor this now) my experience has been a sharp reminder that I have all too often squandered the gifts God has given me and, with all sorts of wise-sounding excuses (of course), not pursued the calling I believe He laid on my heart about five decades ago.

And it’s far past time for me to prayerfully make myself available to that calling and pursue it, seeing where — if anywhere — it takes me.

Is this an act of whimsy?

I’m ready to find out! I hope you’ll join me on this journey for just a few minutes every day. Who knows? Perhaps you’ll be inspired to capture whimsy for yourself!
