“Jesus doesn’t want us to be a better version of ourselves; He wants us to be a more accurate reflection of Him”. (Bob Goff in Catching Whimsy)

When I read that sentence in todays devotion, I at first thought Goff was splitting hairs. Because really, won’t a “better version” of me be a “more accurate reflection of Him?” But the more I’ve thought of this as the day has played out, the more I’ve come to agree with Goff; the two are not the same.

Why not? Because if I just set the very-general and lofty goals to be a “better me”, there are two problems. First, a “better me” is nowhere near what God wants from and for me. Second and more importantly, as long as a “better me” is my objective, my focus is still me

Instead, my focus must on becoming more and more like the perfect Example — Jesus Christ. And I can only do that by keeping my eyes on Jesus and doing and saying what He would do or say, even if I don’t feel like it.
